The Tangier Commune

The Tangier Commune represents the institution that manages the affairs of the city of Tangier, which is the capital of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, and it is its largest city in terms of area with 124 square kilometers. Besides, as far the population of the entire territory of Tangier-Asilah province is concerned, it is more than one million people (1,152,215 people, according to figures from the High Commission for Planning issued in January 2021, the exact total number at the time was 1,152,215 people).

The Tangier commune was established in 2002 after the adoption of the city unit system. It is one of the 6 major Moroccan cities operating in the district system. It currently consists of 4 districts: Tangiers Al-Madina, Beni Makada, Souani and Magougha.

The Tangier Commune Council, which was elected during the communal elections of September 8, 2021, consists of 81 male and female councilors, distributed among the following political bodies:

The Tangiers Commune is currently headed by Mounir Lymouri, and the names of the previous officials who held this position are as follows: Dahman El-Derham (2003 – 2009), Samir Abdel Mawla (2009-2010), Fouad El Omari (2010-2015) and Mohamed Bashir Abdellawi (2015-2021).
